Hyundai's Aug sales surge 46.8%

September01, 2003 19:38 IST

Hyundai Motor India, India's second-biggest carmaker, on Monday said its car sales surged by 46.8 per cent in August to 14,436 units on higher domestic demand and exports.

Domestic sales grew by 20.6 per cent to 11,093 units while exports soared by 428 per cent to 3,343 units, a company statement said.

Sales of the flagship Santro model jumped by 44.5 per cent to 11,843 units while the mid-sized Accent clocked a 61 per cent growth to 2,400 units during the month under review.

Sales of the luxury sedan Sonata remained flat at 150 units.

The company also sold 43 units of the newly-launched sports-utility-vehicle Terracan in August.

HMIL said the existing three weeks backlog in domestic retail supplies would lengthen further due to strong export demand, which has necessitated the resheduling of production for exports.

The company had started car exports to Western European countries of Italy, Spain and Netherlands for the first time in August.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of South Korea's biggest carmaker Hyundai Motor Company, HMIL produces cars at its factory outside Chennai. The capacity of the plant, which now stands at 150,000 cars annually will be increased to 250,000 cars by the end of next year.
