After witnessing a total sell-off on Friday, the Sensex in its extended trading session on Saturday, opened with a gain of 8 points at 4,874.

Early volatility dragged the index to low of 4,851. The markets, however, stepped up its gains by early noon deals, and peaked up towards the closing bell as unabated buying across-the-board lifted the index above the 4,900 levels to touch a high of 4,925.

The Sensex, finally signed off the day with a gain of 46 points at 4,912. The Nifty, after a weak opening, recovered as the trading progressed, and closed up a per cent (13 points) at 1,563.

Reliance and ITC clocked a per cent gain to Rs 469 (up Rs 4) and Rs 860 (up Rs 5), respectively. The Reliance counter clocked a volume of over 813,000 on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 37 crore (Rs 370 million). HLL, which traded at mixed levels, ended up Rs 2 at Rs 183.

SBI shot up 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 465, with volumes surging over 549,000 on the BSE. While BHEL closed up a per cent (Rs 6) at Rs 451, HPCL was up a tad at Rs 337.

Grasim at Rs 910 (up Rs 20 or 2%), Gujarat Ambuja at Rs 273 (up Rs 11 or 4%), ACC at Rs 229 (up Rs 6 or 35) and L&T at Rs 398 (up Rs 7 or 2%) rallied sharply on strong buying support.

Tata Power, on the back of a volume of over 814,000 on the BSE, spurted 6% (Rs 14) to Rs 265. Hindalco (up Rs 19 or 2% to Rs 1,200), BSES (up Rs 10 or 2% to Rs 477) and Tisco (up Rs 4 to Rs 355) attracted considerable buying interest towards the closing bell. More than 18.4 lakh (1.84 million) Tisco shares changed hands on the BSE with a value of Rs 63 crore (Rs 630 million).

ICICI Bank, however, ended at lower levels at Rs 243 - down Rs 2. Zee closed down a rupee at Rs 132.

Infosys (up Rs 13 to Rs 4,626), Wipro (up Rs 6 to Rs 1,419) and Satyam (up Rs 2 to Rs 313) reversed their downtrend and ended with steady gains. Satyam registered a volume of over 23.33 lakh (2.33 million) on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 72 crore (Rs 720 million).

Tata Motors moved up nearly 2% (Rs 6) to Rs 370, and the counter clocked a volume of over 800,000 on the BSE. While Bajaj remained steady and added Rs 5 to Rs 933, Hero Honda ended marginally lower at Rs 378.

Dr. Reddy's advanced 2% (Rs 23) to Rs 1,290. While Ranbaxy added Rs 12 to Rs 984, Cipla was up Rs 5 at Rs 1,137.
