India's top 15 b-schools, IIM-A ranked number one

Early this week, we published the results of Business Today's top 10 b-schools in India which surprised many as IIM-A, the top-ranker according to many such surveys had lost its prime position. The annual educational survey conducted by outlook magazine along with leading market research agency Marketing and Development Research Associates (MDRA) has revealed a list of 75 top management institutions in the country.

This comprehensive top 75 list of institutes includes both government and private business schools.

The institutes were ranked on the following parameters -- selection process, personality development, academic excellence, infrastructure and facilities, placements etc.

The survey claims that only those b-schools that sent their objective data have been ranked.

Among the non-participants included institutes like IIM-Lucknow, Institute of Rural Management, Anand and Mudra Institute of Communications Ahmedabad (ranked 12 in the survey).

While IIM-Ahmedabad topped the overall list of management colleges and government colleges in India as always, XLRI-Jamshedpur was ranked the top position in the private schools category.

1. IIM- Ahmedabad

Leading the list all the way is Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad.

Established in 1961, the institute is synonymous to providing the best of faculty members in the field of management in the country.

It also topped the list of top 15 b-schools by recruiters' perception and faculty perception category.

2. IIM-Bangalore

On second place is Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore.

Established in 1973, IIM-Bangalore is known for its research facilities and has an excellent team of faculty members and department heads.

IIM-B also ranked second in the top 10 list of government schools in India, besides maintaining the second place among top 15 b-schools by recruiters and faculty perception.

3. IIM-Calcutta

On third place is Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta.

It was established in the year 1961 as the first Indian Institute of Management in the country.

An institute par excellence, IIM-C is known for its extensive facilities and activities in the field of research and consultancy.

4. XLRI Jamshedpur

On fourth position is XLRI Jamshedpur.

Established nearly two years after the country's independence, in 1949, XLRI is one of the oldest educational institutes imparting professional education to students.

XLRI also tops the Outlook's list of top 10 private schools in the country for 2011.

5. FMS Delhi

On fifth place is Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi.

It was established in 1954 under the University of Delhi to offer management education to students.

FMS boasts of being the first business school in India to have started the Full Time MBA programme.

Among its notable alumni include Raghav Bahl, the owner of TV18 group.

6. MDI Gurgaon

On sixth place is Management Development Institute-Gurgaon.

It was established in 1973 with the active support of Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI).

Spread over 37 acres of land, it is counted among the most prestigious management colleges in Northern India.

Among its resources include fully air-conditioned classrooms, well-equipped libraries, computer centres and recreational facilities for students.

MDI Gurgaon boasts of 75 faculty members, including national and international and has collaborations and tie ups with various international institutes of education as well.

7. IIM-Kozhikode

On seventh position is Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode.

Although it was established in the year 1996, it moved to its current campus in Kunnamangalam in 2003.

IIM Kozhikode holds the credit for being the first Asian institute to offer a distance learning programme in management for working executives. The programme is called Interactive Distance Learning.

It currently has an enrollment of about 650 graduate students and 15 doctoral students.

8. IIM-Indore

On eighth place is Indian Institute of Management-Indore.

Established in 1998, it has the largest campus in the country among all the IIMs -- an area of 193 acres.

The institute is strategically located and is proximal to one of the fastest growing industrial belts in central India and Special Economic Zones around Indore, thus giving students the most conducive learning environment.

The institute believes in imparting experimental education to its students.

9. IIFT Delhi

On ninth position is Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi.

It was started in 1963 by the Government of India to professionalise the study of foreign trade management and its various facets and thereby facilitate better trade relations with neighbouring nations.

With close to 85,000 students taking the IIFT entrance exam last year to fill up 220 seats, it is one of the most challenging b-schools to get admitted to in the country.

10. SP Jain Institute of Management, Mumbai

On tenth position is SP Jain Institute of Management, Mumbai.

Established in 1981, it is an autonomous institution and one of the few Indian management institutions to have international branches in Singapore and Dubai.

Besides Outlook, SPJIM, Mumbai has also been ranked among the top schools by QS, The Wall Street Journal, Open magazine, and Business India.

11. NITIE, Mumbai

NITIE, Mumbai or National Institute of Industrial Education (NITIE), Mumbai is at number 11 in this list. 

It was started in the year 1963 to offer industrial and technical education to students. It is spread over 67 acres of land and provides a lot of student-friendly education programmes at post-graduate and doctoral level.

It has various forums to cater to the myriad needs of the student community, including arts, entertainment and a few of them supporting social causes as well.

12. IMT Ghaziabad

On 12th position is Institute of Management Technology (IMT) Ghaziabad.

It was established in the year 1980 and its 14.7 acre fully residential campus conducts programmes at post graduate, doctoral and executive level.

It has an annual enrollment of about 540 post graduate students and 15 doctoral students ably supported by a staff of about 80 faculty members.

13. XIM Bhubaneshwar

XIM, Bhubhaneshwar or Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubhaneshwar stands at number 13.

It was established in 1987 and offers post graduate, executive and certificate programmes in management to students. 

It has an annual enrollment of about 500 students at postgraduate level well guided by an academic staff of 47 members. They have collaborations with several business schools in Paris, Germany, Spain, US and South Africa.

14. NMIMS Mumbai

NMIMS, or Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS University) stands at number 14. 

Established in 1981, it is a private university offering management education in the city and has campuses in Mumbai, Shirpur, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

It has an annual enrollment of about 1000 students ably guided by a faculty strength of about 200 staff members.

15. JBIMS, Mumbai

On 15th position is Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS).

JBIMS is also known as Mumbai University's Department of Management Studies in Mumbai.

JBIMS alumni are known to hold leading positions in India and abroad.

Among its notable alumni include film director Mani Ratnam and entrepreneurs like Uday Kotak, Sidharth Roy Kapoor, Rohit Narang and more.
