2nd Test, Day 3: India lead by 157 runs at close of play

India hasn't had a boundary for almost 13 overs now. 

And it will end that way. India end Day Three on 70 for one (in 29.2 overs), an overall lead of 157 runs with nine second innings wickets left.

Murali Vijay is unbeaten on 39 and giving him company is Ajinkya Rahane (on 28), the two having added 67 runs for the second wicket thus far. 

The final session of the day produced 78 runs (in 34.2 overs) and four wickets were lost.

Overall a good day for India.

Rahane and Vijay are doing well for the visiting side. A single by the latter, off Kaushal, helps India reach the 50-run mark, in the 19th over. 

Another single by Vijay, off Herath this time, helps raise the 50-run partnership for the second wicket.

A couple off the first ball, by Mubarak, helps Sri Lanka reach the 300-run mark. 

Three balls later, Mishra cleans up Mubarak (22). Tharindu Kaushal is the new man in. 

From 224 for three, when the second new ball was taken, Sri Lanka have collapsed to 300 for eight.

However, Mathews (102) has a lapse of concentration soon after, and Binny has him caught by Vijay at first slip. It is his first Test wicket. And it's a not a no-ball this time.

Mathews' 167-ball innings was inclusive of a dozen hits to the fence.

Mubarak begins with a couple of exquisite boundaries, one each off Ishant and Yadav. 

Binny replaces Ishant (20-2-68-2) in the attack in the 95th over. He has Mubarak in all sorts of trouble. 

Kohli is off the field for a while and Vijay is in charge. 

A reverse sweep off Ashwin goes to the fence and earns Mathews his sixth Test hundred, his first against India.

Ishant strikes immediately after, having Chandimal (11) caught by Rahul at second slip. 

Ishant's twin strikes have helped India hit back.

And we are back for the second session. Mathews starts the proceedings with three successive boundaries off Ishant. 

However, it is Ishant who finally provides India the breakthrough, having Thirimanne (62) caught behind. The batsman is not happy with the decision.

Thirimanne's 168-ball innings was inclusive of five boundaries and he helped his captain add 127 runs for the fourth wicket.

Mishra replaces Ashwin (22-2-63-1) in the attack in the 78th over. It's twin change, Yadav replacing Binny (14-4-36-0) in the next. 

A single by Mathews, off the second ball, helps raise the 100-run partnership for the third wicket. It's 217 for three after 80 overs. The new ball is now due.

The second new ball is taken. Yadav to bowl the last over before lunch.

Sri Lanka reach 224 for three at lunch, still 169 behind the Indian total. Mathews is unbeaten on 70 and Thirimanne 57, the two having added 110 runs for the fourth wicket.

The home team managed 84 runs in 28 overs. More importantly, they didn't lose a wicket.

It's been a frustrating session for the Indian team.

With the spinners proving ineffective, Kohli is forced to make a bowling change. Binny replaces Mishra (14-2-23-1) in the 75th over. 

A single off Ashwin halps Thirimanne to his fourth Test fifty, his first against India.

Amit Mishra is handed the ball in the 61st over, replacing Yadav (13-5-45-1).

In the next over, Virat has Ishant (14-2-38-0) replaced by Ashwin. So it is spin from both ends as India desperately look for a wicket. 

A single off Mishra helps Mathews complete a well-deserved half century. It is 23rd Test fifty, his third against India.

A couple by Mathews, off Yadav, helps raise the 50-run partnership for the fourth wicket. 

This duo is frustrating the Indians no end with this partnership. 

The scoring rate isn't very fast but they are playing cautiously, not allowing the visiting bowlers any leeway.

Sri Lanka has reached 166 for three after 60 overs.
