Kotla Test: Chanderpaul ton dominates Day One

A spectacular 111 not out by the ever-dependable Shivnarine Chanderpaul helped West Indies reach a respectable 256 for five on the first day of the opening Test against India at the Ferozshah Kotla on Sunday. 

The veteran's 167-ball knock was inclusive of seven hits to the fence and two over it and he was involved in two vital partnerships - a 108-run stand for the fourth wicket with opener Kraigg Brathwaite (63) and an unbroken 56-run stand for the sixth wicket with stumper Carlton Baugh (19 not out) - that helped consolidate the visitor's innings. 

Pragyan Ojha was India's most successful bowler finishing the day with figures of three for 58.

It was also the veteran's seventh Test hundred against India.

Pragyan Ojha strikes for a third time in the innings, on this occasion breaking a 108-run fourth wicket stand by having Brathwaite stumped. 

The dismissal, Dhoni's 199th, makes him the most successful stumper for India.

The 18-year-old batsman made 63 and faced a whopping 212 balls showing tremendous concentration. 

West Indies have made 180 for four after 70 overs.

Kraigg Brathwaite and Shivnarine Chanderpaul ensured West Indies regained the initiative at tea on Day One of the opening Test against India at the Ferozshah Kotla. 

Brathwaite was unbeaten on 61 and Chanderpaul on 55 as the visitors reached 159 for three (after 64 overs) at tea. 

The lone success for the hosts in the second session came in the form of Darren Bravo (12), and that too in the first over of the session. 

Brathwaite and Chanderpaul have thereafter put on 87 runs for the fourth wicket.

Brathwaite and Chanderpaul have combined well for the fourth wicket, giving the West Indies innings some much-needed stability. 

In the process, the duo have registered their respective half centuries. 

For young Brathwaite it is just his second Test fifty while for the veteran Chanderpaul it is his 57th, his 11th against India.

India has secured an early success in the second session, with R Ashwin cleaning up the dangerous Darren Bravo (12) in the fifth ball after resumption. 

It is Ashwin's first Test wicket. 

However, Brathwaite and veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul have thereafter steadied the Windies innings. 

The visitors have reached 106 for three after 44 overs.
