Skipper Sourav Ganguly on Saturday underwent a second surgery to remove an abscess in his left thigh.

Ganguly, who returned to Kolkata on Friday night from Mohali after he was ruled out of the second Test against New Zealand, underwent the thirty-minute surgery under general anaesthesia at a nursing home.

"I'm now feeling better. The pain is much less," Ganguly said.

An evening bulletin issued by the nursing home said Ganguly's condition was stable and he was on normal diet.

"We went for the minor surgical procedure as he was in severe pain and in a great deal of discomfort," Dr Mrinmoy Nandy, head of the doctors who conducted the operation, said.

The doctors opened the wound and removed the accumulating pus and slough (dead tissue).

"We'll review his condition late tonight, after which a decision will be taken on his release. But the normal hospitalisation period in such cases is 48 hours," he said.

Ganguly's brother Snehasish, however, said he expected the doctors to discharge the skipper on Sunday morning.

"It's too early to say when he can return to on-field action. The wound will take some time to heal. Only after 48 hours can we say something concrete," Dr Nandy said.

On Tuesday, Ganguly had a minor surgery at Mohali for the abscess.
