World's tallest residential buildings

The Trump World Tower in New York City became the tallest residential building in the world in 2001. However, its glory did not last long.

Dubai's stunning skyscrapers came into the limelight. In 2003, the Century Tower in Dubai surpassed Trump World Tower as the tallest residential building.

Later in 2005, Q1 in Gold Coast, Australia, became the tallest residential building in the world.

Today, Dubai reigns supreme in residential skyscrapers.

1. 23 Marina (Dubai, UAE)
Height: 395 metres (1,296 ft)
Storeys: 90

One of the most attractive projects in Dubai, the building has 48 duplex apartments offering panoramic views over The Palm, Jumeirah, Burj Al Arab and the Arabian Gulf.

Built by Hircon LLC, a joint venture between Mumbai-based Hiranandani Developers and ETA Star properties, the tower has spacious two, three bedroom apartments and duplexes.

The Dubai Marina complex is located beside water side promenades, has facilities for water sports, shopping, dining and all modern amenities.

2. The Marina Torch (Dubai, United Arab Emirates)

The Torch is part of the Dubai Marina luxury complex. The residential tower offers great views of the Marina and the Palm Jumeirah.

The building with 676 apartments offers a range of excellent facilities.

Queensland Number One or Q1 is located in Surfers Paradise, on the Gold Coast. It is the tallest building in Australia.

Designed by architect Al Hashemi, HHHR tower is the third tallest residential building in Dubai, and fourth tallest residential building in the world.

Completed in 2006, the stunning Millennium Tower has 301 three-bedroom and 106 two-bedroom apartments.

Located beside the tower is a 10-storey car park with 471 parking bays. The roof has a 25 metre long swimming pool, a gymnasium and squash courts.

13. 21st Century Tower (Dubai, UAE)

The 21st Century Tower has a gym on the top floor and a pool on the roof. The skyscraper has seven elevators.

The request for an elevator is processed through an intelligent elevator system, which automatically directs the closest elevator to the requested floor. The architectural design was carried out by Atkins.

14. 8 Spruce Street (New York, US)

Also called Beekman Tower, this skyscraper was designed by Frank Gehry.

The building's exterior is made up of 10,500 individual steel panels of different shapes so when people move around it, its shape appears to be changing.

15. Triumph-Palace (Moscow, Russia)

In 2003, Triumph Palace became Europe's tallest building. However, in 2007, Naberezhnaya Tower C in Moscow surpassed this tower to be the tallest in Europe.

The building has 9 wings, each with its own entrance. All the wings are connected internally by a common public area on the first 5 floors. It took 7 years to build this stunning building.

15. Tower Palace Three, Tower G (Seoul, S Korea)

This luxury residential skyscraper was the tallest building in Seoul, South Korea till 2004. It was surpassed by the Northeast Asia Trade Tower in Incheon.

Tower Palace Three was designed by United States-based architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill.

16. Trump World Tower (New York, US)

The Trump World Tower at United Nations Plaza is one of the most luxurious residential towers in the world. The building offers one, two and three bedrooms and penthouses with four bedrooms.

Amenities include a private spa and health club with a 60-foot swimming pool, a restaurant, a private wine cellar and a landscaped garden.

17. Sapphire (Istanbul, Turkey)

Sapphire is one of the highest buildings in Istanbul. It has a Metro connection and 6 levels of underground car park.

Besides the inner gardens, every tenth floor has recreation areas with designated areas for golf and a huge swimming pool on the top floor.

18. City of Capitals (Moscow, Russia)

A multifunctional complex, including two skyscrapers, City of Capitals is located in the International Business Centre in Moscow city.

The City of Capitals, symbolising Moscow and St. Petersburg was completed in 2009. The building has an entertainment complex, office suites, and large apartments.

19. Sorrento 1 (Hong Kong)

Sorrento is a residential complex of five buildings. Built by The Wharf Estate Development and MTR Corporation, all the buildings were completed in 2003.

Sorrento's facilities include indoor garden, outdoor playground, billiard room, tennis court, gymnasium, squash court, outdoor swimming pool, library, 3 multi-function halls and table tennis room.

By 2014, India's financial capital will have the world's tallest residential building!

Lodha Developers plans to build the world's tallest residential tower at a cost of Rs 2,000 crore (Rs 20 billion) in central Mumbai.

The 1,450-feet (442 metre) WorldOne will come up at Worli on a 17-acre plot. The units would be priced between Rs 7.5-50 crore (Rs 75-500 million).

However, World One may become the second tallest residential building in the world if 'The Pentominium', a skyscraper under construction in Dubai, is completed by 2013 as per schedule. The residential tower funded by Trident International Holdings will be 516 metres (1,693 ft) tall.
