The shipment of desktops grew by 32 per cent during the quarter under review, while that of notebooks posted a 126 per cent growth, Gartner India analyst (computing systems) Vinod Nair said on Tuesday.
The growth is in "confirmation with the trends observed during the first half of the calendar year", he said, adding, the country's share in Asia-Pacific region rose to 10.4 per cent from 9.2 per cent recorded during the same period of the previous year.
From a market share perspective, Hewlett-Packard maintained its leading position with a 14.3 per cent (11 per cent in Q3, 2003), followed by HCL with 12.1 per cent (9.1 per cent), while IBM clocked 8.3 per cent (6.2 per cent) market share in the country, he added.
Acer posted a 3.4 per cent (3.1 per cent) market share and other PC-makers posted lower market share of 58.2 per cent from 67.2 per cent posted during the comparative quarter of last year.
The data includes that of desk-based PCs, mobile PCs and IA32 servers, Nair said.
"While the corporate market continued to look healthy, top vendors are now seen to be aggressively targeting the premium end of the consumer segment," he added.
"Local entrants are expected to gain some market share in the short term with price-point advantages over branded players, though quality of after-sales service will be highly questionable," Nair said.
On the future trends in the industry, he said, "Some telecom service providers are now tapping avenues to bundle the desktop with Internet service making it available at affordable monthly plans".
"If priced properly, this will be a good move to increase desktop penetration and to grow the market in India," he said.
Meanwhile, the PC shipments in the Asia-Pacific (excluding Japan) rose 9.8 per cent during the reporting quarter, selling over 85 lakh units. The sequential rise in shipments amounted to over 3.1 per cent, he added.
The APAC PC professional market grew 15.7 per cent, with the growth contributors being India, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand and Vietnam, where the quarter was the "seasonally buying quarter".
The PC home market in APAC grew at a dismal 2.2 per cent, due to weak performance in South Korea, where consumer spending was "sluggish".
Desk-based PC market recorded a 6.5 per cent growth year-over-year growth, driven by a demand from emerging markets like India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, while mobile PC was at 26.1 per cent.
Lenovo topped the charts with a 11.9 per cent growth, followed by H-P (10.1 per cent) and IBM (7.9 per cent).
Dell and Founder Electronics also contributed to the growth with 7.2 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively.
