Mumbai-born real estate developer Sunil Puri, like the other Obama delegates from Illinois, Ann Lata Kalayil and Selma D'Souza, has also known Barack Obama long before his run for the United States Senate in 2004 'through mutual friends who are also state legislators'.
One of the many supporters cheering on Barack Obama -- during his acceptance speech at the Democratic Convention at Colorado -- was his brother-in-law Professor Konrad Ng, a Chinese Canadian originally from Burlington, Ontario. "Barack is just a terrific guy," says Ng, and recalls with fondness how much the presidential hopeful had put him at ease the first time he visited the Obama household.
Harris, an appointed at-large delegate from California to the convention, said, "I was very proud to be one of the first elected in California to endorse Barack Obama. I supported him for the US Senate and he supported me in my race to become the first Indian-American district attorney in the country."
Hasan is also one of the leading fund-raisers for the party and its candidates in California and the leading Indian American 'bundler' of contributions, first for the presidential campaign of Senator Hillary Clinton and now for Senator Barack Obama.
"In terms of India, in terms of South Asia, you cannot find a more knowledgeable person than Joe Biden. And indeed, right now, the Biden-Lugar legislation on Pakistan is the most important piece of legislation in terms of foreign policy on the Hill. It's trying to reorient our foreign policy toward that country to make it more comprehensive -- not just one that was individual-based and transactional as it was before."
