BCB seek India's participation in tri-series

M Chhaya in Kolkata | March 12, 2003 12:42 IST

Worried officials of the Bangladesh Cricket Board have spoken to Board of Control for Cricket in India chief Jagmohan Dalmiya about the fate of next month's tri-nation tournament in Dhaka following indications that India is unlikely to participate in it.

Representatives of the BCB met Dalmiya on Tuesday, but the meeting was kept a low-key affair. The members are in Kolkata to gauge the BCCI's interest in the competition in light of media reports that the latter is not interested in sending its team.

The BCCI, reportedly, isn't interested in the tri-nation series also because of Bangladesh's poor show in the World Cup. South Africa is the third team.

If India doesn't participate, the tournament could fall through.

BCCI secretary S K Nair has, however, reportedly said in South Africa that India would participate in the tournament.

BCCI sources said Tuesday's meeting also discussed India's participation in the Asia Cup, which is to be held in Dhaka after the tri-nation.

The Indian government doesn't favour playing Pakistan in bilateral matches, but it is still to be seen if it objects to playing Pakistan in the Asia Cup. The government hasn't yet expressed reservations about India playing in the Asia Cup.

Perhaps, apprehending a ban on playing in the Asia Cup, Dalmiya has already written to Union Sports Minister Vikram Verma urging him to lift the ban on playing Pakistan in every kind of competition.
