Warne vows to battle for World Cup fitness

December 26, 2002 23:02 IST

Australia's Shane Warne believes he is progressing well in his recovery from a shoulder injury in a bid to play in the World Cup in South Africa in February.

The leg-spinner, rated by Wisden as one of the five cricketers of the century, dislocated his right bowling shoulder when he dived for a ball during a one-day match against England in Melbourne on December 15.

"When I saw Errol Alcott (team physiotherapist) on Christmas Eve, he was very happy with my movement and was very happy with my progress a week after an operation," the 33-year-old said in an interview aired on Australia television on Thursday.

"If I keep improving like that then my chances will be good. It all comes down to confidence," added Warne, who was a key figure in Australia's 1999 World Cup success.

"It's too early to say that (to give a percentage on his chances). At this stage, all I know is I'm committed to the rehab, I'm committed to what I have to do in the next four to six weeks and hopefully I'll be on that plane to the World Cup.

"To keep my fitness up, to keep my shoulder work going with Errol and just do whatever I can, and whatever it takes it I will do that and if that means I'm not right for the World Cup then so be it.

"I'm just going to give it my best shot, I don't know if that's a 50-50 chance or whatever."

Warne had a shoulder reconstruction in 1998 and missed the first four Tests of the 1998-99 home Ashes series before suffering the embarrassment of being dropped from the side during the 1999 Caribbean tour.

He is Test cricket's second-highest wicket taker with 491 wickets, behind former West Indies pace man Courtney Walsh's 519.

Warne was presented with a framed Australia baggy green cap in a glass case by Australian Cricket Board chairman Bob Merriman during the tea interval at the fourth Ashes Test against England in Melbourne on Thursday, marking his 100th Test against South Africa in 2001-02.
