Former union minister Natwar SinghNatwar Singh on Saturday hit back at the Congress saying the party has conveniently forgotten that it too was named in the Volcker report as a "non-contractual beneficiary".
They have asked for information to be provided before November 23.
Volcker panel, which investigated the oil-for-food scam, mentioned in a report that Natwar Singh was a beneficiary of Iraq's oil-for-food programme.
Asserting that the party was in no way connected with the issue, the Congress recalled that it was not in power at the Centre between 1996 and 2003 when the deal was executed.
"The report has as much validity as the report by the CIA director about the alleged existence of Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq," he said referring to the report by Paul Volcker, former chairman of the US Federal Reserve.
The Speaker ruled that these did not relate to the Union government, nor were they matters of recent occurence.
The ministry of company affairs on Thursday said it will look into the Volcker committee report to see whether there has been any violation by the Indian corporates named in it.
'It is in the interests of everybody, including those named in the report, to have the truth established,' says UN Under Secretary General Shashi Tharoor.
The report has named Natwar Singh as a beneficiary.
