Consumer durables major Videocon Industries has firmed up its telecom plans and is making an initial investment of Rs 6,000 crore for rolling out GSM services, notwithstanding spectrum and legal issues besieging the sector. The services will be launched through its subsidiary, Datacom Solutions, by May. In case of a delay in spectrum allocation, the company may opt for taking spectrum on lease.
The telecom major at present has footprints in MP-CG, Punjab, Haryana, UP-East, UP-West, Gujarat and Bihar circles.
According to research firm Gartner, the budget tablet category is expected to reach 182 million end-user devices by end of 2013, it said.
The company has also tied up with Nokia Siemens to share 4G technology.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is looking into the funding and transactions of Datacom Services (now Videocon Mobile), which was among the firms awarded a 2G telecom licence in January 2008.
Diversified business group Videocon on Thursday said it aims to become one of the top three mobile handset manufacturers in the country this year.
