Established in 1977, The Hindu Temple Society of North America Sri Maha Vallabha Ganapati Devasthanam, popularly known as the Ganesh temple, is regarded as the first and oldest Hindu temple in North America.
Six American Indian were awarded the Eliis Island Medal of Honour. The Award celebrates the immigrant experience in the United States.
Dr Uma Mysorekar, president of the Hindu Temple Society of North America will offer 'responsive prayers' at the special service which will "symbolise America's traditions of religious tolerance and freedom", the Presidential Inaugural Committee said. "The National Prayer Service, which will embody the themes of tolerance, unity and understanding, is a worship service for all Americans," he said.
Mayor Bloomberg shared a breakfast chat with representatives of six major faiths at the Mayor's annual inter-faith meet. Hinduism was represented by Dr Uma Mysorekar of the Hindu Temple Society of North America and six other Krishna devotees.
