For nine years, Narayanan Krishnan has served millions of meals to the mentally ill in Madurai. And he now dreams of providing a shelter to them. However, due to lack of funds the project has hit a roadblock. Ganesh Nadar reports
'Twelve people have been rehabilitated since we opened this home. We did not give them any medicine nor were they treated by any psychiatrist. All I did was sit down with them and listen. Once they poured out all the angst in their hearts they became normal,, Narayan Krishnan, the Mother Teresa of Madurai, tells A Ganesh Nadar
'I don't feed beggars. They can look after themselves. The mentally ill won't ask anyone for food or money,' says N Krishnan who has been feeding them thrice a day for the past seven years. We proudly launch our Independence Day special series: Extraordinary Indians.
A 23-year-old inmate who escaped from the Akshaya Trust home, founded by CNN hero Narayanan Krishnan, alleges that she was raped. This has cast a shadow over the non-profit organization, that houses mentally ill inmates in Madurai. A Ganesh Nadar/Rediff.com investigates the controversy.
