The Austrian police today arrested an Indian national after he allegedly opened fire at them during a raid in connection with the last month's killing of a visiting Sikh preacher at a local Gurdwara in Vienna.
Amrit Singh, a 26-year-old security company staffer, fired at Wega and Cobra special forces officers who searched nine flats and houses during a coordinated raid on Monday, Vienna police spokesman Michael Takacs said.
All six accused in the violent attack on a gurdwara in Vienna that left one top leader of an India-based Sikh sect dead and another injured have been identified as illegal immigrants, police said on Friday, days after the incident sparked riots across Punjab and Haryana.
Takacs said the attackers who pulled out knives and fired from a gun on Sunday as the 'Sant' was preaching to about 200 disciples at a gurdwara near Vienna, were Indian nationals who were living in Austria for some time.
The fight erupted following a dispute over the sermon given by a priest from Shri Guru Ravidas Sabha.
