The ban on export of onion will continue till its previously announced deadline of March 31 as the government is keen to keep prices under check and ensure domestic availability, a top official said on Tuesday. On December 8, 2023, the government had banned export of onion till March 31. "Ban on onion exports has not been lifted. It is in force and there is no change in the status," consumer affairs secretary Rohit Kumar Singh told PTI.
In the retail markets, rates have fallen to Rs 30-35 a kg from Rs 100-level.
Onion prices have been rising due to speculation amid anticipation of below normal monsoon despite sufficient supply in the country.
Onions prices are still ruling at an unaffordable level, though rates have started softening both in the wholesale and retail markets across the country following government measures like allowing cooperative Nafed to import onions.
Prices started rising again beyond Rs 30 per kg in the last one week and are now ruling at Rs 32 per kg at Lasalgaon
Last date for submitting the offer is August 27.
Wholesale prices too rose at the same pace to 45-55 per kg in the national capital and other states.
