The Jammu and Kashmir high court has held that a Muslim man's power to divorce his wife is not "unrestricted or unqualified". Justice Hasnain Masoodi in his 23-page judgment extensively went into details of the Shariah law and Koranic injunctions to hold that a "husband cannot have unrestricted or unqualified power to pronounce the Talaaq."

The Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir high court on Saturday rejected the request of the state government to spare the services of a sitting judge to probe the death of National Conference worker Syed Mohammad Yousuf. In a letter to the state government, Chief Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla expressed the inability to spare a sitting judge as the number of judges was already inadequate and in view of the Supreme Court rulings on the matter, Advocate General Ishaq Qadri said.

Admitting a public interest litigation filed by separatist group Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front on the 17 civilian killings during last year's summer unrest in Kashmir Valley, the Jammu and Kashmir high court on Monday issued a notice to the state government, directing it to submit a report within two weeks.
