A large number of shops at the Hatibagan market in north Kolkata, one of the oldest in the metropolis, were reduced to ashes in a devastating blaze that broke out in the early hours on Thursday, official sources said.
The cyclone ravaged adjacent coasts of the state and Bangladesh between Sagar Island and Khepupara, near the southwest of Mongla in the neighbouring country, after its landfall process began at 8.30 pm on Sunday.
The PM's visit comes at a time when West Bengal has been witnessing widespread protests against the contentious Citizenship Act.
