Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi offered prayers at the famed Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple at Guruvayur in Kerala on Monday. This is Modi's first trip to South India after the Bharatiya Janata Party swept the Gujarat assembly elections.
The committee also decided to recommend to the government to amend the Guruvayur Devaswom Act for removal of the clause, which empowered the 'thanthri' (traditional high priest) as the supreme authority of religious matters.
According to temple sources, the priest insisted on the ritual despite the foreigner's claim that he had embraced Hinduism and changed his name to Pranavahi
The ongoing 'Devaprasnam' -- an astrological exercise held in temples in Kerala -- has found that allowing non-Hindus to the temple is against the will of the presiding deity of the shrine, which attracts millions of devout each year.
