Indian shuttler Anand Pawar pulled off a stunning straight-game victory over top seeded compatriot Chetan Anand to reach the quarter-finals of the Bitburger Open in Germany on Friday. Eleventh seed Pawar beat world No 15 Anand 21-16, 21-13 in 30 minutes and set up a quarter-final clash with fifth seed Eric Pang of the Netherlands, who beat 10th seed Dane Peter Mikkelsen 23-21, 21-11.
Chetan Anand beat Eric Pang 8-15, 15-6, 15-7 to win the Irish Open Badminton Championship.
Saina Nehwal and P V Sindhu got off to winning starts in their season, notching up straight-game victories in their respective opening round women's singles matches in the $500,000 Malaysia Super Series Premier on Wednesday.
