The Church of England has appointed Sarah Mullally as its first-ever female Archbishop of Canterbury. The appointment follows the resignation of Reverend Justin Welby and was approved by King Charles III.
A religious row has erupted among Christian leaders, with conservative priests moving to split the worldwide Anglican Communion over liberal attitude towards homosexuals.
The recent move by the Church of England to allow ordination of women as bishops has caused ripples among traditionalists in the Indian church, especially in Kerala, the seat of Syrian Christianity, with top religious leaders opposing it tooth and nail, asserting that episcopacy was not the job of the fair sex.The historic decision of the Anglican Church, the most influential Protestant congregation, created a vertical split in the Anglican Communion in the world.
"I concluded that an active sexual relationship between two people of the same sex might therefore reflect the love of god in a way comparable to marriage, if and only if it had about it the same character of absolute covenanted faithfulness," said Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.
