Hyd blasts: Cops probe Basher's, Nasir's roles

The investigation into the twin blasts in Hyderabad seems to be taking a new turn in the wake of the home minister of Andhra Pradesh claiming that Mufti Abu Basher was involved in the attack. The Hyderabad police are now looking at the case with a two-pronged approach. They are looking at the role played by both Abu Basher and also Riazuddin Nasir in the blasts.

Mufti Abu Basher, who was arrested earlier this month by Uttar Pradesh police in connection with the Ahmedabad serial bomb blasts, was also involved in the blast in Lumbini Park in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister K Jana Reddy said. After a high level review meeting at the state Secretariat, the home minister told the reporters that after questioning Basher, the state police officials were convinced that he was responsible for the blast at Lumbini Park.

Liyakath Ali, a Students Islamic Movement of India activist arrested in Belgaum a month back, has revealed during interrogation that Abu Basher, who has been arrested by the Gujarat police, masterminded both the Bengaluru and Ahmedabad serial blasts. He also told interrogators that the main intention was to disrupt peace in both places.

The Students Islamic Movement of India has changed its name. The new name for the outfit is SIM -- Students Islamic Movement -- according to Abu Basher, the alleged mastermind of the Ahmedabad and Bengaluru blasts. Basher told the Hyderabad police who interrogated him at Gujarat that it was a conscious decision to refer to the organisation as SIM. "We do not want to have any boundaries and hence by adding India, the organisation would seem restricted," he said.
