India's recent saga of spineless performances touched a new low as they crashed to a humiliating innings and 244 runs defeat well inside three days in the fifth and final cricket Test against England, who clinched the series with a 3-1 margin, in London, on Sunday.

It was yet another abject surrender by the batsman, who were shot out for 94 in just 29.2 overs as they continued their embarassing display succumbing to their heaviest Test defeat in 40 years.

The series win enbaled Alastair Cook and his boys to retain the Pataudi Trophy for the second straight time in three years.

One moment of attacking brilliance and a late Sergio Aguero strike gave Premier League holders Manchester City a winning start to their title defence as they eased past Newcastle United 2-0 away on Sunday.

Ivorian powerhouse Yaya Toure and Edin Dzeko combined to set up Spaniard David Silva before halftime while Argentine Aguero added a second just before the final whistle.

While the performance was far from vintage, City manager Manuel Pellegrini will be pleased with the three points after last week's 3-0 Community Shield loss to Arsenal indicated his side may have some early season rust.

Britain's Mo Farah put aside his recent fitness problems to claim his fourth European title by comfortably winning the 10,000 metres final.

"It meant a lot to me," Farah told reporters after adding to his 5,000 and 10,000 metres European golds in Barcelona in 2010 and his 5,000 metres title in Helsinki two years ago.

"I was really ill a few weeks ago but training has gone well.

"Winning the European Championships again really does mean a lot to me. I didn't want to let people down after missing the Commonwealth Games, it hasn't been easy."

Former captain Mahela Jayawardene was given a fairytale sendoff in his last Test, as Sri Lanka eased to a 105-run victory that completed a 2-0 series sweep over Pakistan on Monday.

The victory enabled batting stalwart Jayawardene to end his 149-Test career with a victory on an emotional day for the 37-year-old, who scored 11,814 runs at an average of 49.84.

"Thank you so much for all the wishes! Got up and realised it's my last day. Bit emotional but the journey has been great!" Jayawardene tweeted before play began.

Not withstanding the humid weather, as many as 124 participants, including 18 women, completed a 12-hour 'ultra run', held for the first time in Mumbai on Friday.

"Though the weather was humid and we had only few spells of rain, majority of the registered runners finished the race. This was Mumbai's first and the country's biggest ultra run," said Pranav Mehta of Shivaji Park Marathon Club, the organising body.

Before coming into the India series, England, and captain Alastair Cook in particular, were under tremendous pressure. They first lost the return Ashes series against
Australia and then the home series loss versus Sri Lanka hurt them the most.

After these two crushing defeats many people were calling for Cook to quit the captaincy.

"Day four at Headingley was a low moment," Cook said.

"Without my wife, I don't think I'd be standing here as captain. You don't often say things like that, I don't know why I just have, but it's the way I feel."

Then in the series against India, after losing the second Test at Lord’s -- their 10th successive Test without a victory -- England showed good spirit and the team stood up together to stage a remarkable revival.

Louis van Gaal found no instant fix for Manchester United as a new era dawned at Old Trafford with a dispiriting 2-1 opening-day home defeat by Swansea City in the Premier League on Saturday.

After a buoyant pre-season campaign, United fans arrived full of hope that Van Gaal would quickly right the wrongs of last season under David Moyes but Gylfi Sigurdsson's 72nd-minute winner left them deflated and underlined the task the vastly-experienced Dutch coach faces.

Captain Wayne Rooney had cancelled out Ki Sung-yueng's opener for the visitors shortly after halftime but Sigurdsson condemned United to their first opening-day top flight defeat at Old Trafford for 42 years.

"It's more than disappointing for the fans," said Van Gaal who was without Dutch striker Robin van Persie through injury.
