Italian Open: Sania-Hingis make winning start; Bopanna-Mergea reach quarters

Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingis progressed through to the quarter-finals of the  Italian Open with a straight sets victory in the women's doubles event in Rome.

After receiving a bye in the opening round, the Indo-Swiss pair recorded 6-3, 6-3 win over Taipei-Georgia pair of Su-Wei Hsieh and Oksana Kalashnikova in the second round contest that lasted little over an hour.
Sania and Hingis, the Australian Open champions, are eyeing their 14th title together.

Since their 41-match winning streak ended in Doha, the top-seeded pair have stumbled in their recent tournaments, going down in the Madrid Masters and Stuttgart Open finals, while making a second-round exits at the Miami Masters as well as at the Indian Wells.

Bopanna-Mergea reach men's doubles quarters at Rome Masters

Indian Tennis ace Rohan Bopannaand his Romanian partnerFlorin Mergea produced a resilient performance as they progressed through to the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

After tasting a defeat in the first set, the sixth-seed pair rebounded strongly to record a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-8 win over French-Portuguese pair of Benoit Paire and Joao Sousa in a thrilling second round contest.
