JCT take Mahindra in their stride

February 18, 2003 19:29 IST

JCT Mills, Phagwara, scored once in each half to beat Mumbai's Mahindra United 2-1 in a seventh Oil PSU National Football League match at the Cooperage in Mumbai on Tuesday.

With this victory, JCT swelled their points tally to 21 from 14 games while Mahindra are struggling on 13 points from 14 matches.

The Mumbai outfit took the lead in the 26th minute when striker Samson Aby Mongba's 30-yard kick was bang on target.

JCT restored parity in the 42nd minute when their medio Hardeep Singh booted home a poor clearance from Mahindra defender Tapan Ghosh following a flag-kick.

Two minutes after half-time, K Yeboah scored the all-important for JCT following a throw-in from the left flank.

In the 50th minute, JCT almost made it 3-1 but their striker Hardeep Gill's shot following a pass from international Jo Paul Ancheri was well-saved by goalkeeper Rajan.

In the dying moments of the match, the home team forced as many as four corners but failed to score as JCT defence effectively countered the attacks.
