The Congress today sought to make it a fight in the prestigious Gandhinagar constituency by pitting two-term party MLA Suresh Patel to take on BJP's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani.
Patel is an MLA from Kalol Assembly segment which falls under the Gandhinagar constituency.
"We have not imported candidates from outside. He is local and will give Advani a run for his money," a senior Congress leader said.
Noted dancer Mallika Sarabhai is also contesting from the seat as an Independent candidate.
Advani has been representing the seat since 1991 and the seat is considered his pocketborough in the Narendra Modi-ruled state.
In the last elections, Congress had fielded a local Gambhaji Thakur against Advani. Sometime back, the party had put up former CEC T N Seshan against him.
