The markets had a strong session on the back of buying seen in banking and IT stocks on the triple witching day. The Sensex closed at 12,698.41 up 75.13 points or 0.6%. The Nifty gained 20 points to close at 3678. The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,514.70 up 50.75 points or 0.8%.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,365.66 up 39.10 points or 0.73%.
The BSE Bankex was up 3.5% at 6,314.59. Oriental Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of India, Union Bank, ICICI Bank and SBI moved upwards.
The BSE IT Index gained 1.12% at 4,791.12. Mphasis BFL, Infosys, Moser Baer, Hexaware Tech and Satyam advanced.
The BSE Metal Index was up 2% to close at 9,102.04. Hind Zinc, Sterlite Ind, Sesa Goa, Mah Seamless and JindalStainless ended higher.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.9% at 8,556.98. Alstom Projects, Lakshmi Machine, Siemens, Ingersoll Rand and BEML closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index closed flat at 3,604.81. Sterling Bio, Glenmark, Divis Labs, Novartis India and FDC closed higher.
The BSE FMCG Index lost 0.6% at 1,986.16. McDowell, Shaw Wallace and Dabur India closed in green.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,321.66 up 0.11% and BSE Oil and Gas Index lost 1.17% to close at 5,812.59.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8870.45 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 41722.27 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3399.27 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 53991.99 crore.
