IN PICS: Kashmir gets the HEAVIEST snowfall of the year

The Kashmir valley is in for the heaviest snowfall of the season. The snowfall which began on Thursday evening after rains during the day is set to continue for the night and Friday as per the local MET office.

Taking note of the forecast, the authorities have set into motion a set of precautionary measures which included closure the Srinagar-Jammu national highway to preclude passenger and goods traffic getting stranded on the 300-kilometre long highway.

The authorities have alerted all deputy commissioners and directed them to keep men and machinery ready for clearing snow from the main roads so that flow of traffic is not affected.

Meanwhile medium danger avalanche warning has been issued by divisional disaster management Kashmir on the basis of information from Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment.

People living in snowbound areas of Naugam, Chowkibal, Machil, Tangdhar, Keran and Gurez in north Kashmir have been advised not to venture in steep avalanche prone slopes during the next 24 hours.
