A log is seen on top of an automobile damaged by superstorm Sandy in the Breezy Point section of the Queens borough of New York.

Superstorm Sandy may consign as many as a quarter of a million new and used cars and trucks to the scrap heap, a loss that could eventually lead to a spike in new auto sales, automakers and dealers said.

So far, automakers have reported that some 16,000 brand new vehicles will have to be scrapped due to the killer storm that flooded coastal areas in New Jersey and New York.

Many of them were stored at the port of Newark when Sandy hit.

A pig dives into the water in Ningxiang county, Hunan province.

Villager Huang Demin drives his pigs to dive into the water from a 3-metre-high platform at least once a day, believing that the diving exercises would improve the quality and taste of the meat.

He would later sell the meat of his pigs at three times higher than market prices, local media reported.

Fan Ling eats dinner with his feet at a school cafeteria in Fuzhou, Fujian province. Fan, 22, a sophomore at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, lost his arms and an ear after an electric shock accident at age six.

Supported by his family, he started daily feet exercises and gradually became familiar with activities like eating, writing, using the computer and mobile phone, and won prizes during high school for sports.

This fall, Fan was on the reality show 'China's Got Talent', which he auditioned for by playing table tennis with his feet, local media said.

Fifty-four families have been living in Puerta de Hierro, on the banks of the Manzanares river for over 50 years. Since the summer of 2010, the community has been subject to evictions on the grounds that the dwellings are illegal.

Families whose houses have been demolished, move in with relatives whose houses still remain while the debris keeps piling up around them as more demolitions take place.

Professional performers 'Doctor Sfrckljana' and 'Doctor Obizek Cvilka', members of the Red Noses clown doctors, perform in a clinic for infectious diseases in Ljubljana.

Since 2004 the 15 clown doctors, inspired by the US Doctor 'Patch' Adams, visit different hospitals throughout Slovenia 2-3 times a week, using laughter to help aid the recovery of young and elderly patients suffering from serious illness or injury.
