Ex-Jharkhand CM Madhu Koda beaten up by jailers

Former Jharkhand chief minister Madhu Koda, who is imprisoned in the Birsa Munda Central Jail, was allegedly beaten up on Monday by jail authorities after he went on hunger strike demanding better food in jail.

He has been admitted to a hospital in Ranchi. Sources say that he could have fractured his hand. 

However, jail authorities denied reports that Koda was assaulted. According to a senior police official, he fell down and sprained his hand during a scuffle.

"Koda was injured after he fell down after being pushed and shoved by some prisoners," said a senior jail official, declining to be quoted.

"The X-ray report showed a slight sprain in his hand and he is being treated for it," he said.

Koda, who was arrested on November 30, 2009 in a Rs. 4,000 crore money laundering scam. He and four former ministers are kept in a VIP cell of the jail.
