The situation at the construction site of the world's tallest building, where around 5000 workers, mostly Indians, went on strike last week, is under control for now, officials said in Dubai.

Over 2,500 Indian workers, working on the Burj Dubai tower project, disrupted construction activity and went on the rampage, causing a loss of nearly $1 million.

Officials from the Indian consulate in Dubai visited the site for talks with the management and the workers, sources told PTI, adding that Indian officials also visited the labour camps where the workers were staying.

According to officials, the Indian consulate is following the developments in the case and has also sent a report to New Delhi on the issue.

Construction on the Burj Dubai project was interrupted on March 22 after Asian workers angered by low salaries and mistreatment rioted, smashing cars and offices. Reports claimed Indian workers were upset when buses picking them up from the construction site arrived late.

Earlier, Lt Col Rashid Bakhit, member of the Permanent Committee of Labour Affairs in Dubai, which investigated the incident along with Dubai Police Human Rights and the Ministry of Labour, said that riots and damaging property was against the law. Those involved in the incident will be investigated and submitted to justice, he said.
