Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, currently fighting against the acquisition of farmland for industry in West Bengal, plans to take up active politics in the state shortly.

State Jamiat general secretary Maulana Siddiqullah Choudhury told a press meet in Nandigram on Sunday, "We are planning to soon enter active politics in West Bengal. We have discussed this with the Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee but not with Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee."

Trinamool Congress backs the BUPC, an anti-land acquisition front in Nandigram, which has witnessed violent protests on the issue.

"The Congress and Trinamool Congress had earlier fought jointly on issues. But now, they are fighting separately. This will cause the movement against acquisition of farm land to disintegrate," Choudhury said, appealing to the Trinamool and Congress to fight the acquisition of land.

Choudhury said the ruling CPI-M was trying to walk along with the Congress, whom he described as a "spent force" in West Bengal.

The CPI-M, he alleged, was not able to pacify its constituents over the police firing in Nandigram. This, he said, would lead to the disintegration of the Left Front.

"We have been fighting against oppression since British rule. Whatever steps the government takes, we will not take them quietly. We will fight back," he said.

Choudhury gave financial help of Rs 4,000 each to the next of kin of those killed in the police firing on March 14.

He also gave Rs 1,000 to the families of those injured and distributed foodgrains and clothes to affected families.
