In the first attack of its kind, militants on Monday attacked two armed cops of the Jammu and Kashmir police with sharp edged weapons in the Yaripora village of south Kashmir's Kulgam district and made good their escape along with the automatic weapons of the policemen.

A senior police officer said militants attacked the security personnel in the Yaripora market where the two policemen were performing their duties on Monday afternoon.

"The cops were critically wounded in the attack and had to be shifted to capital Srinagar for specialised treatment," the officer said.

He said before fleeing, the militants snatched the weapons from the wounded cops.

A massive hunt is on to nab the attackers and recover the weapons.

Police has registered a case and begun investigations.
