US: India centre sought in Minnesota varsity

A Unites States lawmaker has introduced a bill proposing the creation of an India centre at the highly-reputed University of Minnesota, consistent with the country's growth in the world economy.

The varsity already has a China Centre but state representative Erik Paulsen has given three reasons why an India Centre should also be set up.

'Part of the University's mission is to be of service to the state and having this centre devoted to building our state's cultural and economic relationship with India is consistent with that mission,' he said.

Secondly, the lawmaker has argued that 'nobody today can ignore the fact that we live in a globalised economy. India is an important and growing partner in the world economy. Minnesota has an opportunity to forge, and finally as Americans we pride ourselves on being a successful democracy, it only makes sense to build ties with the largest democracy in the world.'

'As part of its mission, the centre would foster an understanding of the history, culture and values of India; serve as a resource to promote economic, governmental and academic pursuits; and facilitate cultural and educational exchanges, collaborative research, and teaching and training activities,' he said in a statement.

'The University recognised China's emergence as an economic superpower long before many even considered its potential for the state's economy. India has been making enormous strides in recent years. It only makes sense for Minnesota to build institutions and relationships with India as we have done with China,' Paulsen said.

The lawmaker pointed out that one of Minnesota's fastest growing trade partners is India, with exports up 114 per cent during 2001-2005.

'The population of India combined with the country's emerging presence in manufacturing excellence, IT, pharmaceuticals and bio-technology presents an incredible opportunity for Minnesota to foster relationships and encourage economic development,' Paulsen said.

'India doesn't have energy sources. As a leader in the development of renewable energy, Minnesota can show them the way,' he said, adding that the state had already taken some steps to recognise India as a potential key partner for the future -- there was a trade mission to India in 1995 and the current Governor has scheduled one for later in the year.

'As Americans, we pride ourselves on being the world's most successful democracy. It only makes sense to build closer ties with the world's largest democracy,' Paulsen said.
