People fed off her when she lived. And now six years after her death, Princess Diana still means big bucks to many people.

But her former butler Paul Burrell insists that he will be discharging his royal duty when his book, which includes a letter written by Diana predicting her own death 10 months before she was killed, hits the stands on Monday.

A British tabloid has, over the past week, carried excerpts from A Royal Duty, prompting a heated exchange between the royal family and Burrell.

The book delves into Diana's personal life, the break up of her marriage with Prince Charles and her private correspondence.

It has also stirred new controversy over the events surrounding her death.

Many have criticised Burrell for "cashing in" on Diana's memory.

Last week, Diana's sons Princes William and Harry issued a statement saying: "We cannot believe that Paul, who was entrusted with so much, could abuse his position in such a cold and overt betrayal."

In an interview to BBC, which will be broadcast on Monday, Burrell says that "just one phone call" would have stopped him from publishing the book.

Asked about the princes' criticism, Burrell says: "I felt immediately that those boys were being manipulated and massaged by the system, the palace, the grey men in suits and by those who did exactly the same to their mother."

"We have to grow up and get on with it and the boys are now adults. They're not children any more and their mother will be talked about."

Burrell stood trial last year, accused of stealing hundreds of Diana's belongings, but the case collapsed when Queen Elizabeth stepped in with a statement that wrecked the prosecution case.

The Queen said she remembered Burrell telling her after Diana's death that he would look after some of her belongings.
