A student opened fire on his friends in a school cafeteria in Washington, killing at least one person and injuring several others before killing himself.
Four students, including two cousins of the gunman, were shot in the head, with three severely wounded at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.
The shooter Jaylen Fryberg was a freshman at the school, but Marysville Police Commander Robb Lamoureux said he could not provide more information on the gunman or his motive.
Eyewitnesses said the Fryberg stared at the students as he shot them on Friday. They described a chaotic scene at Marysville Pilchuck High School, as panicked students ran for safety.
"I was eating... I hear four gunshots and it was behind me. I saw a gun pointed at a table... then I ran out of the exit," a student Alex told KIRO TV news.
Two girls are in the intensive care unit at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, and two boys are in ICU at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Providence spokeswoman Erin Al-Wazan said. Three are "very critically ill" with "very serious" injuries, she said. One is in serious condition, CNN reports.
Television images showed students evacuating the school with their hands over their heads while officers from several local police agencies searched and cleared the school campus.
The students who witnessed the shooting remained in the school for hours being interviewed by investigators.
The gun used in the shooting has been traced to Fryberg's father, a law enforcement source told CNN. It is a "high capacity" weapon but did not have an extended magazine, the source said on condition of anonymity.
The source said investigators are searching the family home.
