One person was killed and at least three others injured on Tuesday when two Express trains, on the same track, collided near Sahibabad, about 12 km from Ghaziabad.

The incident took place at around 6.20 am when New Delhi-bound Padmawat Express hit Kalindi Express, which was stationary on the same track, near Brij Vihar railway station near Sahibabad, Northern Railway spokesman Rajiv Saxena told PTI.

One passenger identified as Mohammad Rafique, a resident of Ganjdundhuara in Kashiram Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, was killed and three others injured, he said.

The injured, identified as Ram Sagar, Arpit and Salim Hussein, were admitted to Narendra Mohan hospital in Ghaziabad, another official said.

Rescue teams and senior officials have rushed to the spot, he said.

According to the Ghaziabad Senior Superintendent of Police Deepak Ratan, the Kalindi Express had halted at the railway station due to some signal problems.

The rear coach of the Kanpur-Bhiwani Kalindi Express, which was badly damaged after being hit, was derailed due to the impact of the collision, Saxena said.

Rail traffic on the route was disrupted. The traffic would be restored once the tracks are cleared, he added.

In a similar accident in 1995, over 300 people were killed and more than 400 injured when Kalindi Express rammed into Pureshotham Express, which was on the same track.
