At least 14 people were killed and 36 others injured in a collision between a private bus and a tanker at Medvan Khind on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway on Wednesday.
The collision between the private luxury bus and the tanker took place around 7 am, the police said. Resident Deputy Collector Manoj Gohad said rescue operations have already been launched.

"The disaster management machinery has been pressed into service and medical teams have been dispatched to the accident site," he said.
The injured were rushed to various hospitals around Dahanu, Additional Collector Ashok Shingare said, adding the critically injured were being shifted to hospitals in Mumbai.

Four members of a family from Mumbra, a far suburb of Mumbai, were among those killed in the mishap. All but one deceased have been identified, the police said.
The accident took place when the driver of the tanker, proceeding towards Gujarat, lost control and hit the road divider before crashing into the Mumbai-bound bus, they said.

The tanker overturned, while the bus became a heap of mangled metal remains with bodies hanging out, eyewitnesses said.
Among the dead were two young couples and a nine-year-old daughter of one of them, the police said. Shingare, who supervised the rescue and relief operations, said the injured were admitted to hospitals in Dahanu, Kasa, Thane and Vapi besides Mumbai.

Some of them are in serious condition, the additional Thane collector said. The Disaster Control Room of Thane administration said the bodies, after post-mortem, were handed over to their respective families.
