A 27-year-old youth has been sentenced to seven years in jail and fined Rs 11,000 by a Delhi court for robbing a man of his mobile phone worth a little over Rs 1000 four years ago.

"Keeping in view the totality of the facts and circumstances of the case, I am of the opinion that the ends of justice would be met in sentencing the convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of seven years," Additional Sessions Judge Gurdeep Singh said, while sentencing Khajuri Khas resident Mohammed Adil.

According to the prosecution, Adil was caught on the evening of April 16, 2007, within minutes of committing the crime in the Welcome Colony area of North East Delhi after his victim Anand raised an alarm. He was found with the looted phone as well as a knife.

On the fateful day, he along with one of his accomplice, who was later declared a proclaimed offender, had accosted his victim Anand, a local resident returning home from work, and robbed him at knife point.

Riding a motorcycle, the duo first obstructed Anand's way and then put the knife on his chest and forced him to part with the mobile phone worth a little over Rs 1000.

Besides the jail term, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 11,000 on Adil.

Adil's accomplice Gulfam, who first escaped from the scene, was arrested later, but he jumped bail during the trial and was declared proclaimed offender.
