LS polls: Bhattal's role under the scanner

May 24, 2004 20:09 IST

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has sent a report on the role played by his deputy Rajinder Kaur Bhattal in the just concluded Lok Sabha polls, in which she did not campaign, to the party high command.

"We have sent the report regarding Bhattal's role in Punjab where the party was defeated in 11 of the 13 seats to the high command. Now it is for them to take any decision in this regard," he told reporters in Jalandhar.

However, Singh refused to divulge the contents of the report by a three-member team, including him and state Congress chief H S Hanspal.

On whether the axe would fall on ministers who could not muster a lead in their assembly segments for party candidates in the Lok Sabha polls, Singh said, "Since we have to downsize the cabinet by July, this will be one of the criteria while dropping any minister."

On Punjab not being represented in the newly-formed cabinet of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, he said, "I am sure the state will get its share when the Cabinet is expanded."

He had met the prime minister and apprised him of the problems facing farmers and industrialists of the state.

"The Prime Minister was quite positive to our demand for giving a tax-holiday to Punjab industrialists on the pattern of Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Jammu and Kashmir," he added.
