Heavy rains, coupled with thunderstorm, lashed Mumbai on Tuesday evening, bringing the soaring temperatures down and giving respite to the citizens from the sweltering heat.
"The sudden rains brought some respite from the scorching heat and Mumbaikars can now expect temperature levels to come down in the coming days," V K Rajeev, Director (Weather Forecasting) of Mumbai IMD said.
On Monday, the city had witnessed the hottest day in September since 1951 with Santa Cruz weather station registering temperature of 37 degrees Celsius.
"Mumbai had been witnessing high temperatures since the last few days, which led to the formation of thunder clouds. But this is a very temporary phenomenon and will subside very soon," he said.
On Tuesday, while Santa Cruz weather station recorded the maximum temperature of 36.5 degrees Celsius, Colaba recorded 33.8 degrees Celsius.
Earlier, the city's highest temperature in September of 36.4 degrees Celsius was recorded in 1972.
