As many as 113 officers and personnel of central paramilitary forces committed suicide due to various reasons last year, an increase of around 14 per cent over 2005.

Out of those who took their lives last year, 44 are from BSF, 30 from CRPF, 20 from Assam Rifles, eight from CISF, six of SSB and five from ITBP, the Lok Sabha was informed.

According to official figures, 99 sub officers, inspectors, assistant sub-inspectors, head constables and constables of paramilitary forces had committed suicide in 2005, while 84 had taken their lives in 2004.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal said, in a written reply, that "there is no definite trend of increase in cases of suicides and fratricides in the central police forces".

Jaiswal said measures like yoga classes, recreational facilities, games and psychiatrist consultation are being provided by respective forces to personnel for reducing their stress levels.

Significantly, the BSF, which is deployed in the sensitive eastern as well as western borders, has the maximum number of suicides in the last three years. In CISF, the incidents of suicides have come down from 13 in 2005 to eight last year.

The National Security Guard has reported only one case of suicide in the last three years. Out of the total of 296 cases of suicides in paramilitary forces in the last three years, only five were women.
