The All India Muslim Personal Law Board is against making registration of marriages mandatory in the country.

The Supreme Court has directed all states and Union Territories to enact the law making the registration of marriages mandatory within three months.

Terming the idea as impractical, AIMPLB general secretary Maulana Syed Nizamuddin on Thursday made
it clear that the Board had no objection as long as such a registration was allowed to be optional.

"AIMPLB is against mandatory registration of marriages because we see it as interference in the Muslim Personal Law and a step towards Uniform Civil Code," Nizamuddin told rediff.com in Patna over telephone.
