United States President Barrack Obama and several Congressional leaders condemned the Mumbai blasts that killed several people.

"I strongly condemn the outrageous attacks in Mumbai, and my thoughts and prayers are with the wounded and those who have lost loved ones," President Obama said in his message.

"The US government continues to monitor the situation, including the safety and security of our citizens. India is a close friend and partner of the United States. The American people will stand with the Indian people in times of trial, and we will offer support to India's efforts to bring the perpetrators of these terrible crimes to justice."

"During my trip to Mumbai, I saw firsthand the strength and resilience of the Indian people, and I have no doubt that the India will overcome these deplorable terrorist attacks," he said.

Congress members Joe Crowley (Democrat-New York) and Edward Royce (Republican-California), co-chairs of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans, condemned the attacks on innocent civilians in Mumbai.

"We strongly condemn the attacks on innocent civilians in Mumbai. There can be no justification for what took place, and the targeting of civilians on their commute home from work is deplorable.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and we wish those injured a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the people of India, as well as Indian-Americans around the globe, as they attempt to make sense of these horrific acts.

"With the US - India strategic dialogue planned for next week in Delhi, these senseless attacks underscore that counter terrorism cooperation between the two nations must be a top priority," they said.

A bi-partisan group formed in 1993, the Caucus is an influential voice on issues pertaining to relations between the US and India, as well as the growing Indian-American community in the US.

In his message, Congressman Gary Ackerman (Democrat-New York), the top Democrat on the Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, said, in this terrible moment of grief and horror, Mumbaikars, and all Indians should know that the United States stands with you in your righteous anger and shares with you the pain of your loss.

The deliberate murder of civilians is always wrong, it is always inexcusable, and it is always unacceptable for any reason, cause, or belief. It cannot be rationalized, justified or excused.

The perpetrators of this attack must be found, their backers, protectors and funders must be exposed, and justice must be done to all of those involved in this hideous mass murder of innocents.

A bombing of the sort, which has just occurred in Mumbai can not happen without networks and an infrastructure of terror. Nations that tolerate or, worse, encourage, such networks and infrastructure to take root are just as guilty as the terrorists who set off the bombs.

As a nation that has, itself, suffered at the hands of terrorists, the United States must not only be vigilant in prosecuting the war on terror, but also equally aggressive in confronting any nation that continues to facilitate or sponsor terrorists of any stripe," Ackerman noted.
