The Lucknow police recovered the body of a young girl from a locality near the Ambedkar University. Police suspect that the girl, a law student from the university, had been gang raped before being murdered.

The culprits involved are still at large, even as local cops claim to be fast zeroing in on them.

The parents of the girl lodged a missing person’s report with the police on Sunday night.

Some 12 hours later, the police recovered parts of the girl's body in a bush near Lucknow’s ring road in the deserted Vrindavan locality. A resident of the area informed the police about a gunny bag in a dry canal in the locality. Upon recovery the bag was found to contain other parts of the body.

On Tuesday morning the girl’s parents confirmed the identity of the corpse.

According to the victim’s mother, “Our daughter had just recovered from a long spell of jaundice and on Sunday afternoon she expressed her desire to go for a stroll to the nearby Aminabad market.”

“When she did not return until 3 pm, we called her up but her phone was switched off. At 6 pm her phone responded but it was answered by a male voice. Without introducing himself, he told me that my daughter was with him and that he would drop her home in the next one hour,” the victim’s mother said.

The mother went on to add, “But when she did not return until the night and her phone continued to remain switched off, we lodged a report with the police on Sunday night.”

A cousin of the victim has named a young man who had been allegedly harassing her for sometime.

“We have traced all phone numbers that had connected to the girl in recent past and have placed the same under electronic surveillance. We hope to track down her killers very soon,” a senior cop told reporters.

“We are working on this case and hope to solve it soon,” Lucknow SSP Yashashvi Yadav said.

This incident comes a mere 24 hours after the arrest of a Kendriya Vidyalaya teacher for raping a class 12 student. The teacher’s wife and two doctors were also taken into custody for being party to the crime by getting the victim’s two-month pregnancy aborted.
