Senior Congress leader K Karunakaran, who has been admitted to the Christian Medical College hospital in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, was shifted to the intensive care unit again, though doctors said he is progressing well.

Karunakaran was shifted to a special ward from the ICU on September three after it was found that he was responding well to the treatment.

The 90-year-old former Kerala Chief Minister was shifted back to ICU on Tuesday, Dr Lionel Gnanaraj, Superintendent of CMC told media persons.

The internal bleeding he suffered following an accident a month back in Kerala has been arrested, the doctor said.

He was admitted to the CMC for neuro-cognitive and rehabilitation treatment.

The Congress leader, who was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram for about a fortnight, was shifted to CMC on September 1.

His car had met with an accident at Malappuram about a month back while he was proceeding from Kozhikode to Guruvayoor. Though he did not suffer any external injury and resumed his journey to the temple town, a few days later he felt uneasiness and was hospitalised.

However, a scan revealed that he had suffered an internal bleeding due to the accident.
