"Till recently there was popular belief in that the country was under attacks only from Muslim fundamentalists sponsored by foreign forces who struck terror in places like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi. But there is need to rethink the tendency to point accusing finger only at a particular community for terror strikes as involvement of Hindu fundamentalist groups has come to the fore in Malegaon, Ajmer Sharif and Mecca Masjid (Hyderabad) blasts," he said addressing a general meeting of the state unit of the CPM
in Assam.
Karat said such attacks by terror groups were aimed at dividing the society in the country on communal lines and that would put national unity at stake.
Addressing the meeting, the CPM politbuo member and Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Sarkar criticized the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government for adopting the wrong policy in tackling the Maoist menace that has gripped areas of West Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand and Chattishgarh and Maharashtra.
Regarding the insurgency in the Northeast, Sarkar said the root cause of the mushrooming of so many insurgent groups in the region was economic backwardness, rampant unemployment and government's failure to focus on the development of a potent agriculture sector in the region.
