An accident at a nuclear waste disposal facility was detected in central Japan on Friday morning, but there were no immediate reports of any radiation leak or injuries.
An explosion occured at an incinerator for waste within the radiation-controlled area of an experimental nuclear plant in Tsuruga town of Fukui region, Kyodo news agency reported quoting unnamed government authorities.
Explosion was heard around 11:45 am local time. Soon after ventilation fans were put on to cool down the incinerator where temperature rose due to overheating, authorities said.
The reason for overheating was not immediately known, they said, adding that the explosion shattered windows but no
injuries were reported.
Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency officials said no flames were detected on the images of surveillance cameras near the scene.
NISA officials ruled out danger of leaking radiation as the reactor had stopped power generation since March.
Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot, theofficials said, adding that the fire fighters were carrying out inspections at the site.
The incinerator was used to burn contaminated items with low-level radiation, such as workers' protective clothing, officials said.
The 165,000 kilo watt Fugen convertor-type reactor in Tsuruga began full-scale operation in 1979, but has been suspended since March 29, Kyodo reported, adding that spent fuel rods are scheduled to be removed and the plant taken down by 2010.
