Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence is pumping fake currency into the north-east to "cripple" the economy of the region, Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu said on Tuesday.

"The ISI is sending the currency through Bangladesh, Meghalaya and Assam as they are bent on crippling the economy of the north-east," Khandu told a press conference in Itanagar.

"We have definite information that some local leaders are also involved and we have identified them. We are looking for some tell-tale evidences to catch them red handed," he said.

Fake currency with a total face value of Rs 4 crore has entered Arunachal Pradesh, Khandu said.

Urging people to share information with the government agencies, the chief minister assured them that names of those providing clues would be kept a secret and people giving valuable information would be rewarded.

On Monday, Khandu met bank representatives and requested them to install machines in all bank branches to detect fake notes.

The chief secretary has already sent messages to the deputy commissioners to organise camps in their districts for teaching people about how to detect fake notes.

He suggested that the shop-keepers should record the number of the high denomination notes in their cash memo while taking money from customers to check the flow of fake notes.
